Behind the design – Part 1 Penny’s Purse

Empire of Bees handbags and accessories are often inspired by vintage designs, but our pieces are also influenced by international trends and sustainable design techniques. We aim provide on trend pieces with a functional point of difference.

Our Penny’s Purse is no exception to this, the design was conceived the the hustling back streets of Koyoto, Japan in 2011.  Empire of Bees co-founder and designer Claire was inspired by the compact and minimalistic style of of the Japanese accessories. It seemed to be 'the smaller the better' in this society of compact living. The minimalistic approach of quality over quantity lead us to search for the highest quality leathers to complete this design.

Initially it was a challenge for Claire to create a design that was small and simplistic, yet functional to use as an every day purse.

The Penny's Purse was created from this challenging concept and has since become a staple design from our first collection in 2012. With a few design tweaks along the way, like changing over to hidden magnetic clips, we have created a hard wearing design that has become a best seller.

We recently received feedback from a customer who spent two years travelling through Asia and Europe. Her Penny's Purse was her every day purse for cash, cards, train tickets, phone and many other bits and pieces she collected along the way – this adventure is a testament to the design and quality of the product.

Penny’s Purse is available on-line now in eleven different colours. Shop here.
